Extension in Clonskeagh – As seen on RTÉ Home of the Year….

Extension and renovation of an existing house in Clonskeagh, Dublin 14 by Fergus Flanagan Architects. Finalist of RTÉ Home of the Year 2019.

This house involved a total renovation with an extension to the rear. The house was located in mature setting in Clonskeagh, Dublin. The existing house had a north
facing garden and the rooms were cellular with poor internal flow. The house had not been
renovated in some time and was in need of extensive upgrading. The works included upgrading of all building services, insulation and windows to enhance the energy performance and reduce running costs.
The clients are a young family and one of their requests was to include an outdoor living area. The initial starting point was to try and figure out how to get the
sunlight light into a north facing living area. We achieved this by creating an open plan kitchen, living dining space with a vaulted triple pitched roof to the rear of the house
which included large roof lights within the roof. We extended these roofs to the rear of the house which facilitated the covered terrace area. We also created an outdoor fire to
the rear of the house. We connected this outdoor space with a large triple track sliding door.

We remodeled the front of the house and on entering the hallway we ensured that you see right through the house to the garden, increasing the sense of space and light. The front rooms could avail of the southern sun so we positioned both the family room and the children’s playroom in these spaces.
The center or core of the house was used for a pantry off the kitchen, boot room, laundry room and a  store. We also inserted a new feature staircase which was double height and had a large roof light which created a burst of light at the center of the home.
The first floor housed the bedrooms and bathroom. The master bedroom had a walk through wardrobe and a light filled master en-suite.
Our clients were so happy with the end result they entered it into Home of the Year 2019 and it made it to the final.
